Flashing LineageOS GSI on a Carrier Galaxy Tab A7 Lite

Replacing One UI on an unlocked SM-T227U with LineageOS 21 GSI. Firmware updates, Download mode, BROM, TWRP, SPL alignment, and Magisk modules based on physical hardware verification.

There is no official custom ROM for the carrier-gifted Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (SM-T227U, codenamed gta7lite). Replacing the sluggish One UI system requires flashing a GSI (Generic System Image).

The flashing procedure builds on srnoth’s playbook. This note documents supplemental commands, hardware failure modes, and debugging steps from a run on physical hardware. The process wipes all userdata, and disabling FBE (File-Based Encryption) allows partition access in Recovery mode without lockscreen PIN authentication.

Specifications

The unit arrived with Canadian carrier firmware (XAC CSC), an unlocked bootloader, and T227UVLU7DWI2 (Android 13, binary version 7).

The verified base firmware is T227UVLSCFYE2 (Android 14, binary version C). Under Samsung rollback protection, moving from 7 to C is a standard upgrade. Even if the device already carries the XAC region code, upgrading to the matching Android 14 vendor partition is mandatory. Running the GSI on an Android 13 vendor breaks hardware drivers.

Target component combination:

  • Stock firmware: T227UVLSCFYE2, CSC T227UOYVCFYE2 (XAC)
  • Recovery: TWRP 3.7.1 gta7lite v2.2 (includes Fastbootd fix) and fbe_disabler_gta7lite.zip
  • GSI image: AndyYan LineageOS 21 official variant arm64_bvN, never the -vndklite build
  • Kernel boot image: stock boot.img with SPL (Security Patch Level) aligned to the GSI ro.build.version.security_patch

The vndklite variant triggers a black-screen bootloop on this Android 14 vendor.

Host Environment

Use native Linux on bare metal. USB passthrough under virtual machines and LXC containers introduces timing latency that breaks the BROM handshake. I connected the tablet directly to a Proxmox VE host.

Required host tools include adb, fastboot, mtkclient (Python 3.10+ required due to PEP 604 type syntax), official Odin4 1.2.1 (odin4-1.2.1-dc05e3ea), and lz4.

Samsung Download mode enumerates via the CDC ACM protocol. If the host kernel driver cdc_acm claims the interface, reading the PIT (Partition Information Table) fails with LIBUSB_ERROR_OVERFLOW. Unload and blacklist the driver before flashing:

Terminal window
sudo rmmod cdc_acm
echo "blacklist cdc_acm" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/cdc_acm-blacklist.conf

Open-source Llucs odin4 5.x completes the handshake on MediaTek Samsung hardware, but PIT retrieval fails. Retrying on the same Download screen hangs at Setup Connection. Use official Odin4 1.2.1, and cold-reboot into Download mode after any failed attempt.

Hardware Button Combinations

  • Force power off: hold Power + Volume Up + Volume Down for about 10 seconds until the screen turns completely black. Unplugging the USB cable does not power off the device because the internal battery remains connected.
  • BROM mode: BROM (Boot ROM) identifies as USB device 0e8d:0003. Power off the tablet and disconnect the cable. Start the mtk command on the PC to enter listen mode, then hold Volume Up only while plugging in the USB cable. The MediaTek SoC draws power over VBUS, and the display remains completely black. Do not press Power, as holding Power + Volume Up boots Recovery mode instead.
  • Download mode: USB device ID is 04e8:685d. With the device powered off, hold Volume Up + Volume Down and connect the USB cable. When the yellow warning screen appears, press Volume Up once to enter the light blue Download interface.
  • TWRP mode: From power off, hold Power + Volume Up. When the orange bootloader unlocked warning appears, release both buttons, press Power once, and immediately resume holding Power + Volume Up. Never let the device boot normal Android after writing custom recovery, or Samsung will restore stock recovery on first boot.

Downloading Stock Firmware

Samsung FUS (Firmware Update Server) returns HTTP 403 when requests omit an IMEI or serial number. Use samloader with the -s flag passing the tablet serial:

Terminal window
samloader -m SM-T227U -r XAC checkupdate

The output confirms target version T227UVLSCFYE2/T227UOYVCFYE2/T227UVLSCFYE2/T227UVLSCFYE2. Download the archive:

Terminal window
samloader -m SM-T227U -r XAC -s <serial> download \
-v T227UVLSCFYE2/T227UOYVCFYE2/T227UVLSCFYE2/T227UVLSCFYE2 \
-D -O ./fw

Extracted packages contain BL_, AP_, CP_, and CSC_OYV_T227UOYVCFYE2. Flash with CSC, never HOME_CSC, to guarantee clean partition recreation and userdata erasure. Archive hashes from FUS can differ from third-party mirrors. Trust the extracted contents and Odin4 built-in Check file verification.

Flashing Base Firmware

Put the tablet into Download mode and run official odin4 to write the four archive packages:

Terminal window
odin4 -b BL_T227UVLSCFYE2_*.tar.md5 \
-a AP_T227UVLSCFYE2_*.tar.md5 \
-c CP_T227UVLSCFYE2_*.tar.md5 \
-s CSC_OYV_T227U*_*.tar.md5 \
--reboot

If a previous attempt encountered a PIT overflow error, do not retry on that same screen. Force power off and re-enter Download mode cleanly.

Let the tablet boot into stock Android once. Verify system properties via adb shell getprop:

ro.build.PDA = T227UVLSCFYE2
ro.csc.sales_code = XAC
ro.build.version.release = 14
ro.boot.flash.locked = 0
ro.boot.verifiedbootstate = orange
ro.boot.veritymode = enforcing

The bootloader remains unlocked (ro.boot.flash.locked = 0). The veritymode = enforcing state is expected because the stock firmware package rewrote the vbmeta partition. Re-enable USB debugging in Developer Options and permanently authorize the host machine RSA key.

Writing vbmeta and TWRP

Because the bootloader is already unlocked, skip da seccfg unlock.

Power off the tablet and enter BROM mode by holding Volume Up and inserting the cable. Run mtkclient to patch AVB (Android Verified Boot) verification and dm-verity:

Terminal window
python mtk.py da vbmeta 3

If the DA (Download Agent) drops the USB connection during stage 2 with EXIT:1, force power off and re-enter BROM mode until both verification and verity flags succeed.

Check lsusb after completion. If the device remains at 0e8d:0003, write the recovery partition in the same active session without unplugging:

Terminal window
tar -xf TWRP_v2.2_gta7lite.tar
python mtk.py w recovery recovery.img

The physical recovery partition is 32 MB, while the extracted recovery.img is roughly 37 MB. mtkclient truncates the written stream to 32 MB. The truncated tail consists of padding and the AVB footer, which does not prevent TWRP from booting.

Immediately use the two-stage button combo to boot TWRP. Run adb devices in the terminal to confirm the device reports product:twrp_gta7lite.

Aligning SPL and Flashing GSI

The Security Patch Level in the Android boot header must match the patch date declared by the GSI system image. A mismatch triggers a blank lockscreen loop when setting a PIN and rebooting. This failure is an Android security check regression and occurs regardless of Magisk.

Extract boot.img from the official AP_T227UVLSCFYE2 package. Check the patch date declared by the AndyYan LineageOS 21 GSI image:

Terminal window
grep -a -o 'ro.build.version.security_patch=[0-9-]*' lineage-21.0-*-arm64_bvN.img

The expected value is 2026-09-01. Unpack the boot header with magiskboot, update os_patch_level to the matching year-month format (YYYY-MM), and repack:

Terminal window
./magiskboot unpack -h boot.img
sed -i 's/^os_patch_level=.*/os_patch_level=2026-09/' header
./magiskboot repack boot.img

Rename the repacked output to new-boot.img.

With the device in TWRP, push and install fbe_disabler_gta7lite.zip, then format the data partition:

Terminal window
adb push fbe_disabler_gta7lite.zip /tmp/fbe.zip
adb shell twrp install /tmp/fbe.zip
adb shell twrp format data

Samsung stock bootloader fastboot cannot flash dynamic system partitions, and stock recovery lacks Fastbootd. Reboot from TWRP into Fastbootd:

Terminal window
adb reboot fastboot

Verify userspace mode:

Terminal window
fastboot getvar is-userspace 2>&1 | grep "is-userspace: yes"

The output of fastboot getvar writes to standard error. Automated scripts with set -e must redirect stderr to avoid unintended script exits.

Wipe the old system partition, delete product to reclaim dynamic partition space, and flash the system and kernel:

Terminal window
fastboot erase system
fastboot delete-logical-partition product
fastboot flash system lineage-21.0-*-arm64_bvN.img
fastboot flash boot new-boot.img

Reboot into TWRP to format data a second time before booting the OS:

Terminal window
fastboot reboot recovery
adb shell twrp format data
adb reboot

Do not run fastboot reboot directly into Android. Skipping the second format triggers boot failure.

First Boot Configuration

During initial setup, do not insert a SIM card, and skip Wi-Fi configuration. Uncheck “Update Lineage recovery alongside the OS” if prompted.

The arm64_bvN image does not bundle org.lineageos.updater. Settings app updates redirect to Treble UpdaterActivity. Because this GSI is a userdebug build, disable the updater component and automated background checks via adb root:

Terminal window
adb root
adb shell pm disable --user 0 me.phh.treble.app/.UpdaterActivity
adb shell settings put global ota_disable_automatic_update 1

Launching android.settings.SYSTEM_UPDATE_SETTINGS now returns no matching activity.

When screen lock is set to “None”, display timeout can cause recurring display wake loops. Disable delayed locking in secure settings:

Terminal window
adb shell settings put secure lock_screen_lock_after_timeout 0

The LTE SKU continuously scans cellular towers without a SIM card installed, draining the battery. Default airplane mode disables Wi-Fi along with cellular. Restrict airplane mode radios to cellular only:

Terminal window
adb shell settings put global airplane_mode_radios cell

For subsequent GSI upgrades, reboot into TWRP via adb reboot recovery, switch to Fastbootd to flash the new system image, and adjust the live boot header os_patch_level to match the new image date. Never use OTA updates.

Magisk and Adaptive Brightness

Rooting requires patching the SPL-aligned new-boot.img, never the unpatched stock kernel. Run Magisk boot_patch.sh on the tablet with KEEPVERITY=true and KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true. Flash the output in Fastbootd, and confirm the kernel header retains the updated OS_PATCH_LEVEL.

LineageOS GSI disables adaptive brightness by default (config_automatic_brightness_available defaults to false), although the hardware includes an AMS tsl2540 ambient light sensor.

Apply a static RRO (Runtime Resource Overlay) Magisk module to toggle the configuration boolean to true. Lux response curves remain calibrated to Samsung vendor values, avoiding the need for third-party Treble brightness sliders.

Extract the module to /data/adb/modules/gta7lite-autobrightness/ and reboot. Verify the brightness flag and enable automatic mode:

Terminal window
adb shell dumpsys display | grep -o 'mAutoBrightnessAvailable= [a-z]*'
adb shell settings put system screen_brightness_mode 1

The terminal output confirms mAutoBrightnessAvailable= true. Static RRO overlays do not appear in cmd overlay list. Real-time ambient light readings can be inspected in dumpsys display under mAmbientLux.
